Britain needs religion

by Calvin Robinson on March 1, 2009.

Controversial I know, but I feel Britain is in a moral troff.  Our society needs some serious work – it’s a mess. We have unbelievable rates of under-age sex, under-age pregnancy, under-age abortions. We have the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the whole of Europe. This is not something to be proud of. In fact I’m extremely ashamed of our country when it comes to these issues.

What has  gone wrong? Are we not teaching sex education at an early enough age? Are we focusing too much on the facts of sexual education and not enough on the emotional side of sex? Is the age limit too high, or  not high enough? Is this  the fault of parents, for not instilling moral values?

We’re obviously missing something. When I look around at other cultures, I realise that Britain is short on morals. We’ve become a culture of casual sex and  binge drinking.

I’ve often  spoken against religion, for several reasons. But when I compare Britain to other cultures, with more morals and less under-age illegal activity, I come to the conclusion that Britain needs religion.

Religion teaches good moral values and the difference between right and wrong. Two things we really need to re-think in our current condition. Maybe schools should read extracts from the Bible, the Quran, the Torah etc.

13 year olds shouldn’t be getting drunk, doing drugs, smoking  and having one night stands. This is just wrong. Yet more and more of our children and teenagers are doing exactly this. Something has to change.

  • I don't agree with you.

Many people are saying the same of the US... Religion hasn't helped us here. If anything, it suppresses needed sex ed and also education about drugs. Many religious types feel the need to bury their heads in the sand about drugs, sex and drinking, so their kids don't hear anything about it... Kids don't know what they're doing, and (girls especially) go farther than they would normally go.

The other problem is the double-standard (slut-stud mentality). Women aren't allowed to sleep around because that's wrong and immoral! But, guys, go ahead!

I don't know if religion is actually the thing that will work. I think people need to take charge of their own behavior. Parents need to take responsibility for their children and their education and teach them right from wrong.

I was not raised in a church... I know of people that were, and they have more sex and do more drugs than I do. (I don't do drugs, but I do drink; however I am also of age to be able to do those things legally.)

Morality should not be legislated, nor should religion.

  • NO definately not. Religion has created more problems than it has solved.

Religion is not what britian needs its more family and social discipline to make everyone aware that with every decision you make there will always be consequences wether good or bad.
  • Amen.
  • Not sure if I dig religion. Organised religion. Not even Jesus hung with that many people. Surely everyone has their own right and wrong way to worship and lives by that?

Agree we need something to engender a community however. I think that's what's missing. A reason not to simply do each other over. Some places it's religion, others it's a central 'dream'. Either way it's a shared experience that binds where various other factors divide.
