Silent Rave @ Liverpool St

by Calvin Robinson on February 10, 2009.

Liverpool Street Station came to a standstill on Friady, when between 5,000 and 10,000 people showed up for a Silent Rave.

Known as a Flashmob, the invitations were sent out via a Facebook event, and people can just show up on the day. The idea is that at 7pm, everyone puts in their earphones and dances away to their own mp3s for fifteen straight minutes. At 7:15 the event is over, and everyone goes cheers. It went something like this, at least. Although there were a large number of people who remained in the station for a good hour after the event, much to the dismay of the police. Everyone was well behaved – for the most part anyway.

The police closed off the station at about 6:45, in preparation for the event. There seemed to be an extremely small amount of cops compared to the huge crowd of people that was building up. @weighsaton and I figured it best to stay towards the edge of the crowd – we weren’t that enthusiastic about being trapped in the center lol. I’ve gotta admit, it was kinda freaky being locked in the station.

It went well, the rave was funny. So many people jumping around and skanking out to their own tracks. Just odd. Everyone was offbeat of course! It wasn’t that silent though. So much screaming and cheering, I couldn’t actually hear my music, without having it on full blast and firmly holding my earbuds in. Madness!

It was a fun night, very different experience. Although probably not something I would want to do again in a hurry, heh.
