TV Commercials

Lets gets rid of them?!

These days I tend to record the few UK programs that I watch, on my Sky HD digibox (dvr), so I usually fast-forward through the adverts. But to be honest most programs I watch are from the US, so I download them – so the ads are taken out for me.

The thing is, on the odd occasion I want to watch some real-time TV, I have to suffer through 5minutes of adverts every 10minutes or so … it’s excruciating.

I would gladly pay Sky an extra £10 a month to get my tv programs ad-free, which I know is possible. Sky have an on-demand service called ‘Sky Anytime’. Anytime features a selection of different programs and films each week or so, for viewers to discover new content. All these programs are ad-free once they’re in the Anytime selection.

The thing is, why should we have to pay extra anyway? At the moment in my household we pay around £100 a month for the Sky television package, and that’s not even including the extortionate BBC license fee. I think we pay enough for television in the UK, especially when we could just download it all for free (sometimes legally, sometimes not so). They owe it to us to remove the ads! Okay maybe not, but come on, there has to be a more pleasant business model than disrupting the viewer experience and throwing ads in our face every few minutes? Sort it out…

  • TV really sucks anyways, just leave it and play some MMOs
  • You haven't looked at TV packages here in the States.

Many people pay upwards of $125 per month just to watch TV. Granted, this has (usually) all of the football, baseball and basketball games per week. Some also pay for pay-per-view.

I don't see why I should pay for TV. We have those converter boxes for each TV in the house, and now we get 12 channels. Before the boxes, we only got 5. Yes, we are using over-the-air antenna broadcasts.

The only time I had cable was when I was living with someone who HAD to have it, it was streaming free into my apartment, or I was living in school housing that had it included in the price. That was during college.

I agree that advertising is irritating, but the stuff I watch anyway is going to have massive amounts of commercials (regular TV, ESPN, FSN, Discovery, etc). The only thing I really, really like cable for is to get CBC broadcasts (love me some hockey and the Canadian shows are HILARIOUS).
