Why I think Obama has been so successful. He’s more than the President Elect, he’s an iconic figure.
We’ve been waiting for someone to guide us as a people, there hasn’t been a ‘Black leader’ in years.
Role models outside of the entertainment industry are limited. Black culture as a whole has been on a side-scrolling mission to nowhere. As a young generation, I feel we’ve lost direction.
We aim to replicate our role models, so if all our role models and rappers, then that’s what we aspire to be. With the few Black people in power being our grandparents age (sorry Kofi Annan), we haven’t had anyone to relate to.
That’s why Obama for me, is far more than the US President. He’s the man we’ve been waiting for. He’s here to fill the void.
I’m not saying I think he’s infallible. Of course he’ll make mistakes, and do/say things we don’t always agree with. But he has great ideas, he’s young enough for us to relate to, and he is going to make a difference.
