The Dark Knight *Spolers*

by Calvin Robinson on July 25, 2008.

Just been to see The Dark Knight at Notting Hill’s Coronet Cinema.

Great film! Truely amazing storyline – gritty, grimey and dark. Much darker than the others – but that you already knew.

Heath Ledger’s take on the Joker was as good as everyone is hyping it to be. I loved the make-up too, much ‘uglier’.

To me it felt like two films. The point where Batman was saved by Lt. Gordon wrapped it up for me, I was waiting for the end credits in the next couple of scenes. It’s at this point that the film took on a whole new chapter – almost like part2… The downfall of Harvey Dent, and the introduction of the bitter Two-Face.

Everytime I thought something was predictable, it would turn out to be a different twist to what I expected. I loved this!
I honestly thought the detonators on the boats were set to blow up the actual boats they were on, rather than the opposing boat as we were told. I figured this would be the ‘social experiment’ – but we never got to find if I was right or not, because as it turns out, surprisingly, neither side actually pulled the trigger.

I did catch on that the guy in the prison cell had a bomb inside him (from the instant he entered, claiming he had pains inside). But I didn’t expect the phonecall to trigger the bomb – I assumed the Joker’s phonecall was to trigger the bombs by Dent and/or Rachael.

This is going to sound shallow, but the only thing I didn’t like about this film was the casting of Maggie Gyllenhaal. I think they could have found a much better Rachael. I know Kirten Dunst was taken by Spiderman, but come on, it’s Hollywood! Maggie just didn’t cut it for me, and people I’ve spoken to so far seem to agree.

I thought the new Bruce Wayne was brilliant too. Christian Bale really is a good actor. I wasn’t too taken by the new Batman though, I found the voice acting a little too cheesy, but as my friend pointed out – how else was he supposed to mask his identity? This isn’t Superman ;-)

Morgan Freeman is one of my favourite actors, if not my very favourite. His appearance in any film brings up its ratings for me.

Alfred was ‘absolutely marvelous’ lol. I found it refreshing that they kept Michael Cane’s true British accent. All too often these American films go for the cheesy, fake ‘Queens English’. They scored bonus points for this too.

In all honesty I’d probably give this film a 9/10. It was fantastic.

As I got home, Batman (1989) was on Sky Action. I’m watching it now, and remeniscing. Turns out I really do miss the old Bat-mobile. Although the new suit is actually quite an improvement, turns out the bright yellow logo and belt are a little too comic-book ^^

Go see it! If you havn’t done already. This is definitely a cinema film. Don’t wait for DVD on this one.
