Broken Silence

by Calvin Robinson on July 27, 2008.

You may have seen me Tweeting about this on Sundays recently, so I thought I should do a little introduction.

Broken Silence is a charitable organization in the UK, setup with the idea of spreading awareness on Sickle Cell Anemia, hence ‘Breaking the Silence’.

Sickle Cell is a hereditary illness which causes sufferers a lot of pain. There is no cure for Sickle Cell, but there are medicines and different ways of making a sufferer’s life easier. Unfortunately SC sufferers don’t always get access to these medicines on the NHS. Not only that, most UK hospitals are not fully aware of how to treat a Sickle Cell sufferer, which I personally find very disgusting.
There are a lot of issues with Sickle Cell, if you want to find out more please head over to http://www.brokensilence.org/.

I want to talk about Broken Silence, the group itself.
BS host a Talent Contest in London on an annual basis. This year is the 3rd show, and today is the last day of auditions.
Auditions run for 5 weeks, possible acts (dance/music/vocal/rap) attend in front of a panel of judges, in the style of ‘X Factor’ or ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ and strut their stuff. If the acts are successful, they will be put onto a short list, and then possibly perform in the show.

The show itself is on the 20th September. You can order tickets on the BS website. Tickets cost £10 and all the proceeds go to charity (not just BS, but also hospitals within the Greater London area).

There will be 4 acts from each category, and a panel of UK celebrity judges.
At the end of the show, the winners will be announced, and given some really cool prizes.

It’s all a lot of fun, and I think Broken Silence are going a good job at spreading the word about Sickle Cell. If you wish to show your support in any way, e-mail calvin@brokensilence.org
